Any surgery, from routine gallbladder removal to a heart transplant, is a major stress on the body and is associated with a certain amount of risk.

That’s why having a physical before a procedure can be critical. For medical teams to take patients through surgery safely, they need information—on general health, surgical and health history, family history, current medications and allergies. This reduces the chances of complications because it allows doctors to determine if the body is fit to undergo the surgery and to choose the right course of anesthesia.

AFC Urgent Care Timonium offers the most convenient and thorough pre-operative physical in town.

Our physician will review all your medications and allergies. It’s especially important to inform us if there’s an allergy or any personal or family history of problems with anesthesia.

We’ll also pay particular attention to your cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, which need to be in the best shape possible for successful use of anesthesia. A pre-op examination also includes some or all of the following:

  • Check of vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, body mass index, respiratory rate)
  • Assessment of risks associated with gastrointestinal tract
  • Check for musculoskeletal malformations/disorders
  • Check for skin infections
  • Airway assessment
  • Blood tests
  • EKG
  • X-ray

If there are any concerns requiring a specialist (most often a cardiologist), we will arrange an appointment for further testing. While many area offices that offer pre-ops bounce the referral responsibility back to your surgeon, we take care of it, to keep the process running as quickly and smoothly as possible.

The stress on the heart during surgery increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, so conditions such as hypertension need to be addressed before the patient goes “under the knife” to minimize these risks.

Being well informed helps your surgeon weigh the risks versus benefits of the particular surgery, giving you the best shot at coming through your surgery with flying colors.

AFC Urgent Care of Timonium offers pre-operative physical exams seven days a week.

Most other clinics and doctor’s offices require an appointment for pre-operative physicals. We do not. Just walk in, and we’re ready for you, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
