Have you been surprised at the number of flu cases among your family, friends and colleagues this year?

You’re not alone. This flu season is already one of the worst in recent history, with cases widespread across the country.

Particularly alarming, is the high rate of deaths associated with the flu this year. And not just among the elderly and sick. Already 30 children in the U.S. have died from flu complications, as well as increasing numbers of previously healthy adults.

Here in our Timonium office, we are seeing flu patients daily, and our medical staff has noted that the cases are especially severe this year.

Often distinguishable from the common cold by the severity of symptoms and their sudden onset, flu may be characterized by:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose

If you find yourself with flu symptoms, we encourage you to visit us as soon as you can. Antiviral drugs, such as oseltamivir phosphate (Tamiflu), can dramatically reduce the duration and severity of symptoms but only if administered within the first 48 hours of the sickness.

Slowing influenza in its tracks is the best way to avoid complications from the flu, which can include pneumonia, sinus and ear infections and bronchitis. The flu can also exacerbate chronic health conditions, such as asthma.

Plus, early treatment can reduce the spread of the virus to co-workers, friends and loved ones.

If you are sick, remember to cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze. And everyone, with or without influenza, should be vigilant about washing hands regularly and disinfecting communal surfaces. And please stay away from work and school if you are sick!

AFC Urgent Care Timonium is open seven days a week and takes patients on a walk-in basis. Most insurance plans are accepted. Visit our York Road office at the first sign of flu symptoms to decrease the severity and spread of the virus.
